The Infrastructure Engineering team is a small team that works closely with the various infrastructure support functions to ensure that good engineering practices are deployed throughout the IT estate, and that support teams display engineering disciplines as part of their day to day activities.The Infrastructure Engineer role provides general technical input and direction to the wider GTS team. The role is hands-on, and will be required to design, implement, and run appropriate processes, produce documentation and standards, and produce appropriate metrics and reports.The role is multi-skilled across all Infrastructure disciplines with scope for learning new skills and technologies, as well as developing existing knowledge, through hands-on involvement and training.

The Infrastructure Engineer role covers the Server/Virtualisation, Storage, Network, Database, EUC and Cloud technology areas.

It will include new technology evaluation/POCs, developing testing methodologies, lifecycle management, and standards and best practise development.

The role will provide best practises and technology patterns to the technical design process.

Automation of administrative activities (using Infrastructure as Code where appropriate) to reduce effort and improve quality is a key focus of the role and the Infrastructure team in general.

The role will share knowledge with other teams to improve technology and process.

Core technology platforms with which the role will be involved include Enterprise Operating Systems, VMware vSphere, HPE x86 Server hardware, Microsoft Database Technologies, Microsoft Azure/365 platforms, Windows Networking, Scripting and Automation (IaC/ARM/HCL), and Monitoring and management.

The Infrastructure Engineer will ideally be experienced across multiple Infrastructure disciplines and be able to demonstrate a depth of knowledge and practical experience in a number of the following (or similar) areas:

  • Public/Private cloud platforms - Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, etc.

  • Windows Operating Systems

  • VMware vSphere and related products

  • Microsoft SQL Server and related products

  • SAN/NAS Storage (Pure, HPE, NetApp)

  • Cisco Networking Products

  • Incident, Problem and Change management

  • IT Security controls

  • Infrastructure as Code - ARM/HCL

Any relevant vendor certifications (VMware, Microsoft, Cisco etc.) are desirable.

Personal development plans to further support your learning and certification will be created and maintained with your manager.

The successful candidate s experience in a support or engineering function will enable them to be a role model to the wider team and default to sharing knowledge.
