Your main role as a Civils Avoidance (CA) Ganger is to lead a crew. We seek someone highly experienced in CA to undertake blockage clearance by using CA techniques you will need to have an in-depth knowledge of the Openreach duct network, have a high level of innovative thinking and resourcefulness and explore all avenues of success to reduce Zzoomm overall civils intrusion, this can include reroutes both OH & UG if available and appropriate to the build area. You will be open and flexible to undertake additional duties as and when they are required.

Some reinstatement will be needed (white top) no black top reinstatement (we have a team in place to handle this).

In terms of tickets we would need you to hold all relevant PIA BTOR accreditations and you should be ok with using a tablet to record build data, site set up etc

Depending on the site, the role will report into our Build Manager

A day in the life of .

As a CA Ganger you will be expected to work underground (rod, clear blockage and install sub-duct) and overhead pulling in cables through existing ducting or hanging them between telegraph poles ahead of the network deployment. For this reason the applicants will need to be confident in underground, sometimes enclosed structures as well as climbing ladders/poles.

The CA Ganger is an important role within the build team, you will be responsible for co-ordinating, prioritising and supervising the work within your own team, ensuring that all works are carried out safely and to the business plan while in compliance to all relevant standards, specifications and approved method statements. You will undertake team briefings as well as concise reporting of progress to the Build Manager & Build Supervisors. You will carry out checks on plant and equipment ensure relevant permits are in place, assessing traffic management where required. You will train and mentor crew members and be focussed on upskilling your team.

What we need you to have

  • Previous experience within FTTP
  • BT Openreach PIA accreditations SA002/SA001 (Safety UG and OH) S8 (PIA Cable Installation Overhead) S7 (PIA Sub Duct and Cable Installation UG) K8 (UG Test Rod & rope) PIA Safe Working In Civils SA006 PIA SA010 Work In Medium Risk Confined Spaces Core Drilling - CD1
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the Openreach PIA network quality standards
  • NRSWA Operative ticket (Streetworks)
  • NOPS Smart Awards card
  • Full clean driving license, preferably including towing
  • 360 Excavator ticket and experience
  • Dumper ticket and experience
  • First aid qualification
  • Site Health and Safety qualification and experience
  • MEWP licence would be desirable
  • Strong leadership skills and teamwork ethic

Experience You'll Need

  • FTTP Build Experience (we dig narrow - 350mm deep, 100mm wide)
  • Confident at working at heights and underground network
  • Civils Avoidance
  • Use of utility detection equipment
  • Use of gas detections equipment
  • Setting up work site in line with NRSWA
  • Ability to use a tablet to read and record site data e.g. photograph as-built and up load to tablets
  • Ensuring health and safety is paramount at all times and PPE is appropriate for each task
  • Address and resolve problems and complaints ensuring a proactive approach is maintained to build successful working relationships with all Clients and both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ensuring risk assessments are filled in prior to any works commencing on site.
  • Complying with Health and Safety regulations, including appropriate use of SLG, PPE and other tools and equipment, as well as maintaining a safe works site at all times.
  • Ensuring all equipment is fit for purpose and the daily plant check is completed and the relevant forms filled in, forms to be handed in to the supervisor.
  • Reporting all strikes, accidents, incidents to management

You'll know how to

  • Motivate and direct individuals and teams to produce high performance and deliver results.
  • Experience of the job role would be preferred, with all relevant Openreach accreditations, but this is not a must as we can provide the relevant training that is required
  • Deliver training within own Crew
  • Ensure high standards of Build Quality
  • Using Civils Avoidance techniques
  • Read design and follow specification
